👋 I’m Jiaxiong.
Presently, I work as a Post-doctoral Fellow with Prof. Xiaojuan Ma at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). In June 2022, I obtained my Ph.D. degree from Tsinghua University (THU). My thesis, titled The Conversational User Interface Design Method Based on Emotional Design Theory, was awarded the Outstanding Thesis Award and was supervised by Professor Yingqing Xu.
“Computers are Social Actors" is more than a theory about the human tendency to greet machines with manners. It is also a design implication: that AI, if it is to enter our social world, must learn the dynamics and skills of human conversation. I envision a near future in which AI is not only a social actor, but part of the fabric of everyday social life: relieving people of repetitive conversational labor while also offering attuned conversational experiences.
My research explores how conversational skills may be transferred from human interaction into AI design, moving beyond the narrow imagination of AI as a mere instrument. I study how verbal and non-verbal capabilities can be built into AI systems so that they may respond effectively and meaningfully to a given context. My research follows two intertwined lines of work: the theoretical exploration of conversational design, including skill transfer and multi-level conversational UX informed by Norman’s emotional design theory; empirical studies that design and build conversational AI systems across contexts such as customer service, health care, and emotional well-being.
